Investigations of a model catchment with saprobic deficits

Short description

In the context of the realization of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) deficits of the macro invertebrate index in the upper Rhine valley became evident within the management plan 2009. Despite of implemented measures like the optimization of the water treatment plants and the combined sewer overflows the problems could not be solved.

Therefore, the main objective is a comprehensive monitoring campaign in the relevant water bodies of the upper Rhine valley. The consequences of the combined sewer overflow, diffuse emissions, sediment quality and further water quality parameters are investigated in detail. The overall context of the results and the interpretation of the comprising data set will provide sufficient information to identify the central causes for the low biological water quality.
